Class 1A

1st Round Playoff Football

At The High School:

History will be made next week on CC Hammann Field when the Comets host  a Class 1A Quarter-final football Playoff  game.

The 10-0 Comets ran away from a young physical Mediapolis  Bulldogs group  49-14 to advance and host  a quarter-final game.  That will be against a 7-3 Pella Christian team that knocked off a fine Wilton team 31-28 (Pella Christian’s three losses came against three 10-0 teams all in the playoffs).

The Comets played tenacious defense that gave the ball to offense six times which the offense turned into points quickly. Three fumbles and three pass interceptions were converted in the next series. They also stopped  Bulldog drives  on 4th and short plays to gain field position.

The offense, once warmed up, executed well with quarterback Lucus Tennant threading the ball into receivers (in tight coverage) and the rushing of senior Hunter Clasen, who followed his line blocking and down field blockers  for 217 yds in  28-carries, 4-touchdowns.  He also added 3 pass catches for 98-yds a touchdown, a total of 317 yards of offense.

Again the line play set this all up for the Comets. It  was superb on both sides of the ball. It had to be because this came against a defensive front that had two 300 lb players and another 6’5” 250 lbs (all good players).

Two fumble recoveries by Brandon Kafer got the Comets started early. Clasen scored in two plays and Ty Kloser added what would be the first of seven kick PATs for a 7-0 lead with 5:39 left in the 1st quarter.

Less then two minutes later Kafer jumped on a bad snap and the Comets were in the red zone. Two plays later Clasen scored from 4-yards  out for a 14-0 lead.  A bit of trickery got the Bulldogs their first score. It came off a double pass, the PAT good 14-7.

The Comets answered using Tennant’s arm and Clasen's legs to hook up on 33-yds pass & run play 21-7.

The Bulldogs came right back with their only big drive of the game. Their fine senior back Zach Osborne rambled 27 yards to cut it to 21-14.

After a  fine kick-off return Tennant then moved the Comets into the red zone with his passing. He hit Trey Daugherty with back-to back strikes,  the last a perfect throw between two Bulldog defenders that Daugherty made a sliding catch for a touchdown.  Kloser’s PAT sent the  game  to halftime 28-14.

After deferring on the  opening coin toss Bellevue picked up right where they left off to start the second half.

They took the kick-off and turned Clasen loose for 61-yards of a 75-yd scoring drive, the last 35 yds coming on  touchdown  scamper.

.60 seconds later a  turnover gave the ball right back and  Tennant hit Daugherty with another scoring strike of 25-yds for a 42-14 lead.

The defense denying the Bulldogs the game went to the 4th quarter.

Bellevue  went to their bread and butter and Clasen answered with  a 20 yard touchdown run with 11:50 left. Kloser’s PAT  started the running clock and the game ended swiftly at 49-14.
