Last weekend saw hot cross-town rivalry basketball action on a cold snowy night. Marquette Catholic hosted the Bellevue Comets on a night in which basketball fans shrugged off the weather and filled the MEC with spirited fans. Â
The Comet girls took the first contest of the evening with a final score of 40-26. The Marquette ladies started the game as cold as the weather, going scoreless in the first period. Their Coach Jim Kettmann commented after the game, "It was one of those nights where we just couldn't get anything to go in the hole. It didn't matter if they were in close, mid-range, long range, we just couldn't buy a basket tonight. But I thought our girls did a really, really nice job defensively. The DeShaw girls are just athletic, and we thought if we could hold them down, then contain the rest of the team a little bit we'd have a chance. But I was extremely proud of our defensive effort tonight. Our offensive effort was ok, we just couldn't make baskets."
Comet Coach Scott Jess said, "Typical Bellevue battle, you can throw the records out, it's just gonna be a war and it was. But it was a lot of fun, we played hard." The Comets were lead in scoring by Kalesia DeShaw with 11, Teagan Humphrey 9 and Ka'Lynn DeShaw 8.  For Marquette, Elise Kilburg scored 18 points with Megan Kremer hitting the glass for 13 rebounds.
The boy's game saw Marquette take the victory by a 64-54 score. The game was a tale of two halves. The Comets led at halftime 36-23 and appeared ready to cruise to a win. The only problem was someone forgot to tell Marquette! Defensive adjustments were made by their Coach Isaac Sturm at halftime, and in the third quarter the Comets saw their lead melt away like an April snowman. In fact, Marquette outscored the Comets 20-3 in the quarter.
Also in that third quarter Comet standout Jensen Wedeking picked up his 4th foul, forcing him to the bench. But the blue and white machine was already leaking oil by that point, so much so that Bellevue Coach Chet Knake was forced to re-insert Wedeking and his four fouls back into the lineup. However, there was no stopping the Marquette momentum and after three quarters they led 43-39.
The 4th quarter also belonged to Marquette as they continued to impose their will and dictate the action, forcing the Comets to react to what they were doing instead of the other way around.
Victorious Marquette Coach Isaac Sturm commented: "We came in knowing it was going to be a battle, we've got two great teams here. Bellevue threw all the punches in the first half, and we got lucky. We came out, played good defense, we rebounded, and rebounding really got us back in the game. Good luck to Bellevue."
Bellevue Coach Chet Knake had this to say after the game: "I give Marquette all the credit in the world. We were up 17, they switched to a 2-3 (zone), we got stagnant, our bad offense affected our defense. We just could never turn it around, but I give all the credit to Marquette. They were the tougher team. They killed us on the offensive glass, they were more physical, they wanted it more than we did, they did the little things, we didn't."
Marquette was led in scoring by Evan Scott with 22 and Spencer Roeder added 18.
For the Comets, it was Jensen Wedeking scoring 21 with Cameron Casel adding 13.
