District Football

Bellevue 42

 Clayton Ridge 7

At Bellevue:

The Comets opened district play with a dominant 42-7 win over the Eagles. They controlled the game from the very first play with a completed pass. The next  play turned into a touchdown.

Hunter Clasen took the hand-off from quarterback Lucus Tennant, followed his blockers and raced 57 yards for a touchdown Ty Kloser added the first of his 5 extra point kicks and the rout was on. Two minutes later Tennant hit Clasen with 17-yd screen pass and he ran it in for a 13-0 lead.

The defense playing tough  (151 total yds/ 10 first downs/ 13 plays for negative yds.)  kept the pressure on and forced another three and out.

Two minutes into the second quarter Tennant ran straight up the middle for a 4-yd score and a 20-0 lead 14-minutes into the game. Another three and out forced an Eagle punt on 4th down Clasen blocked it, Tennant  grabbed it out of mid-air and raced into the end zone for 27-0 lead.

The Comets weren’t done scoring yet, as they  halted a late Eagle drive and scored with 23-seconds left. A 35-yd pass and run play from Tennant to #25 Trevor Hager made 33-0. They opted for the two point try to get the 35-0 lead and running clock to start the second half.  A pass play from Tennant to Dillon Rentz did that, 35-0 at the half.

The clock running to start the second half the third quarter moved fast.

With 3-minutes left in the quarter  Clasen set a school record with a 99-yard touchdown run,  Kloser’s fifth PAT made it 42 -0.

Reserves began to earn valuable playing time in the half and the Eagles managed to avoid the shutout with 2-minutes on a short run by their fine back Erik Sarazua for a 42-7 final.  The win moves the Comets to 4-0, 1-0 district play.

A big showdown with the state’s top-ranked West Branch Bears will be Friday, Sept. 20 at Bellevue, at the Comets‘ Homecoming.
