Scouting

News reports are circulating speculating that the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America may file a Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which is a reorganization, not a liquidation. The National Council has informed us that no decision on a course of action has been made, nor is a decision imminent. We want to assure you that Scouting here in Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois is strong and that the Illowa Council is in a strong financial position.

The Illowa Council and the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America are different entities with completely separate finances. We own Camp Loud Thunder and the Scout Service Center, and ALL assets of the Illowa Council are owned outright, locally. Through years of good financial stewardship, we have built a clean balance sheet, and a strong endowment. That endowment is safe and secure. All money raised in the Illowa Council stays here in the Illowa Council to support our council’s programs and services. We receive NO financial support from the National Council.

The Illowa Council is in good financial shape. With continued community support, we will continue to offer Scouting to an expanding group of truly remarkable young people and their families. Our Scouts and their families are counting on us to do just that!

Please contact the Illowa Council at 563-388-7233 if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Bob Lee, Council President
