Helen Zeimet of Springbrook recently hosted a Christmas Craft and Bake sale at her home for the benefit of the East Central Iowa Autism Chapter. With the help of family she raised more the $1,680. The Centers for Disease Control suggests that 2.4 percent of American children have been diagnosed with autism. With her great-grandson is among those being diagnosed, it prompted her to act with the recent fund-raiser.
Although she and her sister are frequent vendors at regional farmer’s markets, this is the first effort she has held in her home.
“I enjoy quilting and baking,” said Zeimet “and this is one way for me to give back.” She does the hand-stitching on several quilts per year and donates the monies she charges to her local church, Sts. Peter and Paul of Springbook.
Zeimet turns 95 years old this month and said she still feels the need for community involvement and remains able to do so. She lives independently and is active in her church and local civic activities.
“It was a fun Saturday morning project, but I did not expect to collect so much money. I am really happy it turned out so well,” she concluded.
